Who loves a good snack? I do! But it needs to be easy and fast to make.
Whether it is munching on something to tide you over, grabbing a bite to eat on the go, or refueling after a workout, snacks help keep our bodies fueled throughout the day and in between meals.
I am a snacker. If I ate chips or cookies every time I wanted a snack, I would put on a hundred pounds. I need healthy snacks that are easy to make, but are also fast to make, and taste great.
I don’t want a heavy snack to weigh me down, or empty calories that give my body no energy.
A healthy snack can keep energy levels steady and boost metabolism.
Unfortunately, many store-bought snacks are laden with preservatives, sugar and other unidentifiable ingredients.
Sugary snacks and refind carbs, like white bread and crackers, will cause a rise in glucose and give a short term energy rush, but you will eventually crash and feel sluggish as a result.
Fuel your body with healthy food!
Here are 7 easy snack ideas to grab instead of chips.
Planning is key
Planning is key when it comes to healthy eating. You need a plan to keep yourself on track when hunger hits. Have healthy snacks to grab, so you don’t end up grabbing that cookie or a bag of chips.
Eating healthy snacks between meals keeps your metabolism and energy up.
A light snack will help tide you over to the next meal so you’re not starving and eat everything in sight!
7 Healthy Snack Ideas
1. Apples and Almonds
Both apples and almonds are rich in fiber. As a result, you’ll feel satisfied long after your snack, because the fiber helps you feel fuller longer.
Plus apples and almonds offer additional health benefits by helping control your blood cholesterol and sugar levels.
If the thought of eating a whole apple with a handful of almonds sounds dull, get creative.
Roughly chop the apple and almonds, then combine them in a bowl and sprinkle with cinnamon and honey for a raw, apple crisp-like treat.
2. Avocado and Toast
This 5 minute, 3 ingredient healthy snack is a fast, filling snack. Avocado, toast and spices.
Avocados are high in fiber and are a healthy fat to keep you full and your blood sugar balanced.
They also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. In a bowl simply smash half an avocado with a fork.
Toast a slice of sprouted grain or whole wheat bread. Top the toast with avocado, sea salt and ground pepper.
I love the taste of sea salt. Plus it is unrefined, mineral rich and much better than the white stuff in a shaker. For a richer flavor, drizzle virgin olive oil on top.
3. Veggies and Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip
Raw veggies fill you up because of their high water and fiber content.
If you struggle eating veggies by themselves, try dipping them into hummus or a yummy healthy homemade ranch dip made with Greek yogurt for a high protein addition to the vegetable sticks.
Homemade ranch dip lowers the fat content by using Greek yogurt and reduces chemical load by using real spices instead of fillers and preservatives that come in store bought packets. My Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix Recipe.
4. Homemade Trail Mix
It’s fast, it’s tasty and easy to make! Add nuts, seeds, dark chocolate bits or dried fruit together and, you just made trail mix. You can just grab and go with a handful of trail mix for a fast healthy snack.
It’s a perfect travel food because it does not require refrigeration. Trail mix is packed with fiber and protein.
It offers satisfaction to hunger and usable energy for your body. How healthy your trail mix is depends on the individual ingredients used, which is why it is good to make your own.
Trail mix that’s loaded with candy bits or sugar sweetened dry fruit will offer empty calories.
Choose high quality real food ingredients for a healthy snack.
5. Hard Boiled Egg… or… Hard Boiled Egg on Toast
This snack is so inexpensive and loaded with nutrients. Eggs are one of the best ways to get a healthy dose of protein and nutrients.
But be sure to eat the whole egg- the yolk contains Vitamin D, Vitamin A and antioxidants.
Try hard boiling and pre-peeling eggs at the start of the week and store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for an easy grab and go snack. (How to Make Boiled Eggs in an Instant Pot-5 Minutes)
It is also a great snack to add on top of a piece of sprouted grain or whole wheat toast for a fast, 5 minute healthy snack.
I like to top hard boiled eggs with sea salt and ground pepper and a drizzle of olive oil to add taste. Red pepper flakes are another good spice to add a kick to a plain hard boiled egg.
6. Greek Yogurt Peanut Butter Dip and Fruit – high protein snack
This dip takes seconds to make with only 3 ingredients. Plain Greek yogurt, peanut butter and honey.
Peanut butter and Greek yogurt are packed with protein. Additionally, Greek yogurt is packed with nutrients and is a probiotic, which aids in your digestive system.
Combine 1 cup plain Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter, and 2 Tablespoons honey in a bowl and mix until combined.
Refrigerate leftovers. This creamy dip is delicious with a crunchy apple. If you prefer more texture, use crunchy peanut butter instead.
7. Frozen Grapes
Frozen grapes make a great healthy snack. They are cold, sweet, crunchy on the outside, but creamy on the inside.
Frozen grapes have wonderful nutritional benefits and contain reservatol.
Reservatol is an antioxidant found in grapes that appears to have several benefits, such as helping prevent heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
They make a great snack because they are a satisfying, but take time to eat, so you won’t over eat. It’s nearly impossible to down handful after handful of frozen grapes.
Simply rinse the grapes, place them on a cookie sheet or plate and place in the freezer. Remove the grapes after frozen and enjoy!
After frozen, I place mine in a freezer bag in the freezer to grab anytime for a quick snack.
